Why track silver?
Silver behaves as both a precious metal and an industrial commodity. Roughly half of annual demand comes from solar, electronics, and electric vehicles, which is why silver moves differently from gold and warrants its own chart.
Gold/silver ratio
The gold/silver ratio shows how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. The long-term average sits around 60. Read the full guide to using the ratio.
Gold and silver spot
XAG/USD is one troy ounce of silver in US dollars; XAU/USD is the same for gold. See both quotes side by side, with the ratio and the conversions to grams and kilos, on the XAU/USD and XAG/USD spot price page.
Ways to hold silver
Most investors choose between physical silver, silver ETFs like SLV, and silver miners. Each has different cost, tax, and risk profiles. The silver ETF guide and the mining-stocks primer explain how they differ.
